What is Technical Design
Technical Design is the process which immediately follows the Planning Application Stage. It encompasses all aspects of the design from Structural Engineering, Building Regulation and Technical Drawings.
A building is the sum of all its parts working in unison to provide a stable structure. This is fundamental to the design of a building in the 21st century.
Our Building Regulations in Wales set out key requirements that must be met at each stage. These are considered initially during the planning stage but are detailed during the ‘Technical Design’ phase.
Typically, Technical Design drawings are produced to specifically meet the requirements of the Building Regulations but also provide essential Structural Engineering Calculations and Specifications for potential contractors who will hopefully one day build the proposal.
Technical Design can be the most costly phase of a building projects professional fee as it is often the most time consuming part for a Structural Engineer or Designer. *Remember – Technical Design is almost always essential to meet the requirements of Building Control no matter how small or large the structure will be as all new structures will need to meet the current Regulations.
Working with a Structural Engineer can often save considerable expense on a project where the design or dimensions of Steel Beams, Lintels, Load Bearing Structures or Foundations are essential (As set out in Part A of the Regulations)
Working with the Designer can help understand the requirements in Wales for Fire separation and protection (As set out in Part B of the Regulations) and the Conservation of Fuel and Power (As set out in Part L1B of the Regulations) which are now considered the highest standards in the UK.
